Sealants

Sealants protect the grooved and pitted surfaces of the chewing surfaces on back (and sometimes front) teeth where most cavities in children are found. About 80% of all children’s cavities occur in grooves and pits. Sealants are applied to teeth to help prevent cavities. The application is quick, comfortable, and only takes one visit. Your child will be able to eat and drink 30 minutes after the appointment. Rye Pediatric Dentistry does not use sealants containing Bisphenol- A (BPA).

Flouride Treatment

Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay when used routinely in small amounts. It works by remineralizing teeth, disrupting bacteria’s ability to create acids, and making a tooth more cavity resistant. Fluoride occurs naturally in water and is found in many different foods and dental products such as toothpaste, mouth rinses, gels, foams, and supplements.

Fluoride is effective when combined with a healthy diet and good oral hygiene. As with many things in life, too much of any one thing is often harmful. The same concept exists with the use of fluoride. The AAPD has official recommendations for fluoride dosing and Rye Pediatric Dentistry does not recommend its use beyond official recommendations.

Mouth Guards

Athletic mouth guards can prevent serious dental injuries. We fabricate custom mouth guards that provide the best fit and protection for children and teenagers. In addition to protecting teeth, the most important use of a mouthguard is to protect a child from loss of consciousness from blows to the chin. Mouthguards help keep the jaw from moving upward and backward, thus preventing the jaw from “hitting the skull” causing loss of consciousness. In addition, we make night guards for patients with teeth grinding or jaw clenching habits.
